Who helps on Avelune
One admin, and a few members who volunteer. Here is what each of them can see and do.
None of them are counsellors or doctors. If you are in danger right now, call your local emergency number (911 in the US, 999 in the UK), or find a free line that's open now.
The admin
Runs Avelune. Reads every report, every "I'm worried about them", and every piece of feedback, answers check-ins, and is the only one who can warn someone, or suspend or ban an account.
Never shows anyone who reported something or who wrote an anonymous post. Replies from the admin come from the admin account.
Listeners
Members the admin asked to help, for about three months at a time. They are not professionals: they listen, the way a good friend would. You can ask for one on Talk when one is free.
- A listener sees only what you wrote for a listener until they pick it up. Once they do, it is a normal chat, so they see your username.
- They talk with up to 3 people at once, and either of you can end it.
- Listener chats are checked automatically for signs that someone may be in danger. The admin reads one only then, or when the listener asks for help.
- Report on any message in a listener chat goes straight to the admin.
Senior listeners
Listeners who are 16 or older, have listened for a while, and chose to take heavier chats: self-harm, suicide thoughts, things at home. They take one heavier chat at a time and on hours they pick. When no senior listener is on, the admin answers heavier chats.
If someone may be in danger, they see emergency numbers first, and the admin is told at the same time. A senior listener can hand a chat to the admin with one tap if it is more than they can hold.
Moderators
Members aged 16 or older who help sort what comes in, for about six weeks at a time. There may be none yet.
- Feedback: a moderator may sort yours into the right place, and for simple things (a thank-you, an idea going on the board, a how-do-I question) send one of the admin's ready replies. Bugs and anything else go to the admin.
- Reports: a moderator may read a rule-break report on a post or comment and close it, hide the post or comment, or turn off replies. After two weeks they can also remove it or pause someone's posting for a while. If a moderator hides or removes something of yours, you're told, and you can ask the admin to look again.
- The admin can undo anything a moderator does. A posting pause never stops you reading, messaging the admin or using Talk.
- They never see who wrote something or who reported it, never act on anything about someone in crisis, and can't message anyone.
What stays with the admin, always
- Anything that looks like someone is in crisis or in danger.
- Reports on private messages, group chats and Commons chat.
- "I'm worried about them" reports and safety concerns in feedback.
- Anything about self-harm, threats or sexual content.
- Every warning, suspension or ban.
If something with a helper doesn't feel right
Use Report on the message, or tell the admin in Feedback. Helpers can lose the role, and nobody is told who raised it.
Helpers are asked by the admin, usually people who already look out for others here. If you'd like to help one day, you can say so in Feedback.
